• Paying Homage to the Queen!

Los Angeles, California…I drove out to Long Beach today to embark my ship for my 21 day trans-pacific cruise to Australia!

Permanently docked next to my ship is the grand Queen Mary! This historic seafaring vessel has become a hotel, museum, and tourist attraction. It truly is a beautiful ship that reminds me of the Titantic! Long and stately with its red funnels, this ship makes me nostalgic for the old days of cruising.

There is a Princess Diana exhibit as well as an evening tour of ghost hunting aboard. I guess there were many deaths aboard during its years of service and those souls still haunt this grande dame!

I imagine steamer trunks, immaculately dressed guests, and orchestras playing all night in its heyday! What a cool piece of travel history!

  • Zipping thru Tinseltown!

Los Angeles, California…the entertainment capital is made of many distinct areas. Of course, Beverly Hills is known allover the world for its prime real estate and celebrity excesses…but, there is so much more to this city than that! I love West Hollywood and the surrounding Hollywood Hills and usually spend the majority of my time here…shopping, restaurants, and clubs predominate here and really give you a sense of the LA vibe .

One of the thrills of any visit to Los Angeles is zipping around in a car, if you splurge for an over the top sport-car that’s even better! This town judges you by your car, so I guess my rented Corolla is definitely not earning me any fans or admirers!

A trip through Beverly Hills and on through to the Sunset Strip gives me a glimpse of some of the beautiful old movie architecture that this town holds…the Chateau Marmont looms like a castle over Sunset Blvd and is an amazing place to celebrity spot! Further along on the way to Hollywood you see the Hollywood sign in the hills above and of course Mann’s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd known for its stars with celebrity’s feet and handprints in the cement!

For me the true star of the show is Fred Segal on Melrose Ave! This leaf covered shopping mecca is THE place to go…it manages to showcase the perfectly curated collection of the latest styles that speak to the West Coast look that always combines relaxed casual fashion and designer chic! I have been shopping here for decades and still get a rush pulling into the parking lot.

LA is so different to NYC, but it’s a lot of fun because of that…thats why I always enjoy my time in Tinseltown!

  • Rise to the Top!

Chicago, Illinois…what fun playing tourist in my own hometown! I decided to visit the skyscraper formerly known as the Sears Tower; I get in a taxi and ask to go to the Sears Tower and the driver quickly reminds me it was renamed the Willis Tower years ago! Whoops! It’s now known for it’s suspended glass balconies that extend out over the city from it’s sky deck 103 stories above downtown Chicago!

What a rush getting a 360 degree view over all of Chicago from the former tallest building in the world, now only the tallest building in the Western world.

After a 60 second ear popping ride in the high speed elevator, I arrive at the Sky Deck. Not overly crowded, I am able to indulge easily in the views on this clear day that are totally breathtaking! I make my way to the gravity defying clear balconies…I didn’t think I would be phased, but as I took off my shoes and stepped on the glass I started to feel weak in the knees! It’s freaky to think that this can hold up and make you feel you are standing well over 1200 feet directly above the ground…

I laugh at tourists posing in these clear box-like viewing balconies…but they probably thought I was weird too going in barefoot!

I am on a high literally and figuratively enjoying Chi-Town!

  • My Kind of Town!

Chicago,Illinois…I am realizing what an amazing city I grew up in! This beautiful sunny Fall day I have spent strolling through downtown Chicago…

The lake, the river, the art installations of Millennium Park, the architecture & skyline…amazing elements that work together to create a world class city! This Midwestern hub really shines…I am strolling up the Magnificent Mile of Michigan Avenue falling in love once again with my hometown. I am amazed at how the city really combines an urban vibe but retains a Midwest sensibility!

Leaving a place and returning with a new perspective really pays off…I am walking around wide eyed absorbing all that the Windy City has to offer!

  • Done Wright!

Chicago, Illinois…I have travelled the world and yet so close to where I grew up is an area I took for granted for its sights and major contribution to the world of style and architecture…Oak Park is the home of Frank Lloyd Wright and the district bearing his name is a showcase for his brilliance that launched Prairie style architecture! This area served as his laboratory for him to experiment and develop his world renowned and beloved style.

It’s a feast of housing style that lines the historic streets. I have driven by many times in my younger life and didn’t appreciate the magnitude of the impact and importance of this small artistic suburb! It’s breathtaking to walk these streets and see the different homes that explore this style of architecture.

Beautiful modernist lines, a pre art deco vibe, and brilliant use of woodwork and masonry.

Sometimes the best sights are not a world away, but right under your nose! We just need to slow down and take them in…20120923-113025.jpg

  • La Belle Vie!

Paris, France…I arrived in the City of Light a bit weary after 20 hours of air travel from Cape Town via Doha. I always love Paris and have spent a lot of time here over my years in the fashion industry!

Regardless of being tired I am anxious to hit the Parisian streets! I am staying in the Marais which is my favorite area in Paris…how convenient to go check out all my favorite haunts…I love this area for it’s artsy vibe. It has become a fashion destination as well since designers have discovered this neighborhood and set up shop!

Place Des Vosges instantly puts me in a French mood and gets me in a Paris state of mind! From there, I stroll the shops of the Marais, peeking into little hidden squares and taking in some grand architecture.

Next it’s on to the old Jewish ghetto area of the Marais that is still filled with butchers and bakeries! I must stop and indulge in the famous falafel sandwiches and admire the beautiful challah in the bakery windows.

Tea lovers come to the Marais for Maraige Freres, the famous tea shop tucked down a short street in the heart of the Marais. I continue my window shopping and enjoy the beautiful Fall day!

I wind up my stroll through my favorite arrondissement at Hotel d’Ville. This beautiful piece of history is alive with pedestrians and the light sort of bounces off the Seine in the distance!

Paris is feast for the eyes and the palate! I relish my few days here every year in the early Fall…Oh, this is the good life!

  • Flower Power!

Cape Town, South Africa…besides the stunning mountain scape and magnificent ocean side, Cape Town showcases a beautiful array of botanical treats.

Exotic flowers can be seen at the Company Gardens right in the city and also at the awesome Kirstenbosch Gardens. The Protea is the national flower and the Grand Protea is prominently displayed at Kirstenbosch! Horticulturists would be in heaven in this town over the flowers on display at the gardens or at the wild fauna that blankets Table Mountain.

Nature can really stun you with it’s intricate beauty! Seeing it all come together in Cape Town is a treat for any visitor!

  • A View for Days!

Cape Town, South Africa…I have travelled the world and I have never been amazed by a city like this one! It’s blend of stunning natural beauty and cosmopolitan urban cool that is so inviting…the beach, the vistas, and the waterfront set a perfect backdrop for an array of delicious restaurants, a happening night scene, and beautiful fun loving people.

I treated myself to more of Cape Town’s natural beauty today with a day long trip down the peninsula to Cape Point and back! Stunning cliffs, impressive flora, and mesmerizing sea views could be seen all along the way…

Starting out in the fishing village of Hout Bay then down to the Cape of Good Hope until finally reaching Cape Point! The point is a lighthouse topped place where two different seas meet…one cold and one warm. This spot at the tip of the peninsula overwhelms you with it’s beauty as well as it’s display of mother nature at her fiercest! The churning seas crashing ashore and the strong gale force winds that almost knock you over give you a sense of the Hell the seas can hold yet the jaw dropping views beyond the horizon seem to give you a glimpse of Heaven!

What I witnessed today was not made by human engineered nor dreamed up by modern technology…it is one of nature’s great displays of grandeur!

Sometimes words cannot capture the awesome experience that feeling it with all your senses can!

  • Wild Kingdom!

Cape Town, South Africa…I set out today to further explore on a day trip to Cape Point outside of Cape Town. Along the way, the day unexpectedly turned into a zoo of sorts!

I encountered some of the famous and adorable wildlife of South Africa! I started the day with a boat ride from Hout Bay to Duiker Island, better known as Seal Island…This island showcases a large colony of Cape Fur Seals! They are so cute to watch as they play and knock each other off the rocks into the sea and then warm themselves under the African sun.

A further drive out of town and I stopped at an Ostrich Farm…they look harmless but supposedly they can be dangerous! But they frolicked and posed for my camera. Later, I even spotted a wild Ostrich feeding along a beautiful stretch of coastline…

On the way to Cape Point, the van was besieged by aggressive Baboons looking for food! They crawled on cars and stubbornly stopped traffic by blocking the road. It’s hard to believe these clever yet funny looking creatures can really cause so much havoc!

I was startled at the Cape of Good Hope by a creature that was so effectively camouflaged to the rocks that he snuck up on me, almost causing me to tumble off into the sea in total shock! I still don’t know what this opossum looking animal is…

Finally, a stop at Boulders Beach to see the African Penguins! They are a unique breed of Penguins because they make a donkey like sound that has earned them the nickname “jackass penguins”. They mate for life and are monogamous, and they can usually be seen in pairs!

Nature is an incredible thing…both the beautiful vistas and unique species of all kinds that make up this wonderful world!
