• Retail Therapy!

St.Tropez, France…Mother Nature is not being kind to my visit to the Cote d’Azure! Clouds are stopping the sun from shining and dampening everyone’s spirits! But regardless, the yachts are still lined up in Saint Tropez’s harbor and the beautiful people won’t let summer slip away that easily!

I did a quick boat tour of St. Tropez, admiring the houses that dot the waterfront. These mega rich digs are vacation homes for the Fayeds, the Hiltons, the Loreal Company, and numerous other billionaires and international elite!

They love the paparazzi here and star spotting is a major sport! The boat is decked out with shots of celebrities in St. Tropez and they pass around a photo book that documents the who’s who that came to town this summer! Rihana, Zac Efron, Leonardo Di Caprio, and Magic Johnson to name a few!

Since today isn’t a beach day…the next best thing to do here is to SHOP! It’s like being in Paris, except at the beach…the shops are housed in the most magnificent settings and it’s fun going from designer to designer!

Oh la la…I am tempted but gotta have some self control! There are some Lanvin high tops calling my name!

  • A Study in Contrasts!

Istanbul, Turkey…I love this city! So rich and complex…straddling two cultures and two continents!

It has a mystery and a sense of the unknown but also the sophistication and modernity to make it feel familiar.

A visit to the Spice Bazaar, Grand Bazaar, Hagia Sophia, and The Blue Mosque made for a day full of riches! I love experiencing the cultural differences that make the world we live in! It’s intriguing to smell different aromas, taste unfamiliar flavors, and see unknown sights…I relish it! It makes you appreciate how diverse our world is and the many different creeds, religions, beliefs, and customs that all work together to form humanity.

I am still walking around with my eyes wide open and my jaw on the ground as I can never get over the mesmerizing sights of my travels!

  • A Bubble Bath!

Istanbul, Turkey…2 days in this amazing city to enjoy its exotic yet cosmopolitan vibe. Besides visiting all the mosques and bazaars, I wanted to experience a traditional Turkish Hamman… Cagaloglu Hamami, named in the best selling book “1,000 Places to See Before You Die”…this 300 year old bath has hosted sultans and kings and retains many of its original details.

I am stripped down to a tiny scarf sized wrap and wooden clogs, the service starts out with a relaxing 10 minutes in the marble encased steam room. Afterwards, the man performing the service shows up also in a towel…I guess we are going to become very well acquainted!

A rough massage smack in the middle of the Hamman on the marble has me squealing. We then proceed to the bathing ritual of skin loofah, foam bath, and a series of cold & warm rinses! By the time it’s done, I am exhausted but my skin is glowing!

It’s a little weird to get fully scrubbed in front of a Hamman of strangers but a cool experience, nevertheless. The interior itself is beautiful and this hour just spent here just adds to the mystique and allure of Istanbul.

  • Totally in Ruins!

Kusadasi, Turkey…this port city was our pathway to the ancient ruins of Ephesus as well as the much debated final home of the Virgin Mary. The well preserved ruins of Ephesus rival Pompeii in their size and grandeur and are a must see!

I have been here before on a previous cruise, but these sights are definitely something you can repeatedly experience…my travel companion has never been here and I wanted him to experience it as well. I am “allergic” to big tour groups, so instead of an organized outing with a large group following a guide, I decided we shall go it independently. I like being able to customize my experience instead of following some pre set program….A few taxi drivers and a lot of haggling later, we were on our way through the beautiful Turkish hillsides towards the House of the Virgin Mary.

The sights were bustling with an overflow of tourists on buses from allover the globe!

At the house of the Virgin Mary, this holy shrine is a pilgrimage spot for many Christians and hence women visit with scarves on their heads to show respect and collect water from the natural Spring below. There is a wishing wall where you can write your wish or prayer on paper or fabric and attach it to a wall already full of other’s hopes and dreams. I affix my wish to the wall and I hope time will tell!

Afterwards, a hike through the marble laden ruins of Ephesus really provides a sense of antiquity and manmade ingenuity…it’s a sprawling feast for the eyes everywhere you look! Instilling complete awe, you are able to see up close how these buildings and artifacts have survived so well for centuries!

History is so powerful. Exploring ancient marvels such as these makes you realize the enduring power of mankind! Learning about it in a book cannot compare to traveling to feast your eyes on the marvel of it yourself.20120829-020930.jpg20120829-021055.jpg20120829-021137.jpg20120829-023327.jpg20120829-023622.jpg20120829-023954.jpg

  • Three Coins in the Fountain!

Rome, Italy…I love Roma! History at every turn…this city is sensory overload for any history buff or anyone who appreciates amazing antiquities!

After arriving from Poland, it was off for a delicious Italian meal! I got my fix of Artichoke salad (Carciofi) and Bucatini pasta (large hollow spaghetti)…nothing can compare to homemade food in Italy. Delicious!

A stroll past The Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps lets me know I am in Rome…I have been here in the Eternal City a dozen times, but I still get excited by the magnificent Trevi Fountain! It’s an iconic symbol of this city and regardless of the hordes of people, it’s still mesmerizing!

I won’t be here long but I am trying to soak up all the Roman grandeur I can…every time I am here I stroll upon some never before seen ruin…the riches of Roma are always a travel wow!

  • Back to the City!

Warsaw, Poland…after another long bus ride, we made it to Poland’s largest city. A totally different vibe from anywhere else we have been in Poland; a bustling big city with traffic, high rise buildings, and a faster pace!

Most of Warsaw was destroyed during WW II, so there is a lot of bland grey communist era architecture. But today, rising above it all is a lot of construction of new modern towers giving the city a sense of modernity.

I notice the people I pass on the streets seem hipper, younger, more current, and definitely good looking; tall, thin, with terrific facial bone structure and crystal blue green eyes, many have fashion model looks! Obviously, Poles come to city of Warsaw for the opportunity to live their dreams apart from the vast farmlands of rural Poland.

Old town Warsaw has been restored to its former glory. Beautiful Castle Square and bustling Old Town Square have a pristine look. As like all other squares, they are lined with street performers and outdoor cafes.

From countryside to urban landscape, Poland spans a spectrum of lifestyles…it is nice to be able to take in all of Poland’s settings!

  • A Hidden Jewel!

Zamosc, Poland…the old town’s center piece is the Great Market Square. The town has been called The Pearl of the Renaissance and has been compared to Sienna, Italy or referred to as the Padua of the North.

The colorful Armenian houses line the square and the impressive town hall is a magnificent centerpiece. It is a grand place in a simple location that you would never expect to find such grandeur. Plus, it all seems still undiscovered by tourists and you can stroll without the crush of visitors like in Krakow.

An official UNESCO heritage sight, work is being done to restore much of old town to it’s former glory.

Zamosc is that one of a kind place located off the beaten track…but finding that hidden jewel is always a great thing when traveling!

  • Pass the Salt!

Wieliczka, Poland…the weather in Krakow is getting me down! Cold, rainy, overcast…it feels like late October! So, a short trip outside of Krakow seemed like a good idea and off we went to the UNESCO heritage site of “Kopalonia Soli Wieliczka”; the salt mines of Wieliczka.

It is probably the silliest thing I have done this trip…it is a recommended sight, but I really never thought of visiting a salt mine! A three hour tour at 135 meters below ground is a bit ambitious, but I thought “what the hell!”…I have now garnered more info than I really ever needed on salt and the history of salt mining!

It is interesting. Additionally, how it was all built is an incredible feat of man made engineering. The underground cathedral carved fully out of salt is an amazing accomplishment and display of artistry. One of the coolest things down below were the beautiful chandeliers made entirely of salt crystals. But, did I need to see this…NO! But I, along with over a million other visitors a year, have done it.

I am praying the weather will get better and I can re-claim summer before it slips through my fingers!

  • Carb Loading!

Krakow, Poland…my first day in Poland was met with Fall like weather! 50 degrees and periods of pounding rain sent a chill down my spine…I definitely felt that summer had escaped and I was in shock…this is going to take some getting used to…

The town’s main focal point is the huge market square with the massive cloth hall market in the center of it all and flanked on one side by the exquisite St. Mary’s church. The largest square in Eastern Europe, it is something to behold…Ornate and colorful frescos fill the domes and steeples of the church and cafes and vendors flood the square.

Polish food is in my bones, so I was overcome sampling it all…bread, potato pancakes, pierogis! Yum! I even scored a new accessory: the bread necklace! A statement in carbohydrates!

Wawel Castle was a trip back in time…to the royal period in Poland’s history. It was as if I entered the “knights of the roundtable”, who knew this existed in Poland! Highly opulent and grand in scale, even after weeks of castles, I was impressed!

Even in the rain, crowds were out in full force and nothing could cloud the surprising beauty of Krakow!

  • Hungary for More!

Budapest, Hungary…the morning should have been simple, but it was rocky…I bought a first class train ticket, but couldn’t find the first class car and was relegated to airless second class! Then upon arriving, I thought I should buy my onward train tickets to Krakow. The ticket office was packed with smelly back-packers and the wait was over an hour and half! What am I doing? Mini meltdown…Forget it…I stormed out!

The taxi driver annoyed me too… oh, was Budapest gonna be a bust or did I just hit a wall from traveling 6 weeks? I think I was craving a switch from the series of small little towns with village squares and elaborate churches…

Well, I peeled myself off that wall when I got to my glorious hotel, Zenit Budapest Palace! It’s fantastic and things are looking up! The day totally turned around…I love the vibe of Budapest…it’s not just castles and churches(they have them too!)… It’s youthful, has an energy to it, a bustle in it’s step…bigger than the other towns on this tour so far! It’s got fashion and style along with cafes in spades! People everywhere, chilling in parks or soaking in makeshift pools! I am totally responding to this change…

It’s a large city spread out on both sides of the Danube…so my focus for now is just getting my bearings of what looks like a great place!
